Mamata Banerjee begs for help from CPM/Cong and Bhadralok bowling noes and wides to BJP

I must say I am disappointed in how Mamata Banerjee is playing here. No matter what, I used to think that she is a fighter to the core. That belief is shaken now. Otherwise, how do you explain this?

My eyes! Mamata Banerjee begging with the Left for an alliance. What a moment for the young firebrand Congress leader who fearlessly took on the Jyoti Basu regime in Bengal. It appears that age has taken its toll. And more than that, comfort.

All politicians pursue power, but Mamata was somewhat different. All her life, she chased a very specific target. She had been Cabinet minister under both Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh. Being Railway minister is huge. But you could tell that the position meant very little to her. She was ready to quit, all the time. For Mamata Banerjee, nothing mattered. Except the chair of Bengal CM.

And when she finally achieved her dream in 2011, she set about creating a new Bengal. Like an empress, she ordered all of Kolkata painted in her favorite blue and white colors. She designed a flag for “Biswa Bangla” (universal Bengal) that all officials were required to fly. She wasn’t just going to rule Bengal, her taste in culture, art and music would run through the state. Her poems, her paintings, even a theme song she composed for Durga Puja were supposed to be central to the celebration of Bengali culture. She didn’t just want to the CM of Bengal, she wanted to embody Bengal itself.

Check it out here, it’s actually quite good. And if anybody in India still cared for Manmohan Desai style secularism, it would have worked.

In short, Mamata Banerjee wanted to be seen in Bengal like the history books tell you to imagine Akbar. And of course, like Akbar and Jyoti Basu, she would rule for life.

Now those dreams are all but shattered. It’s not just the chair she could lose, but her entire legacy. She risks being written off as a mere two term CM. That’s hardly enough to distinguish her in Bengal’s political history, let alone on the national scene. So many people have served as two term CMs and been all but forgotten.

Weak and desperate, she has reached out to lifelong enemies in the CPM. And her old sidekicks in the Congress. After the 2019 election, I had compared her situation to the last days of UPA 2. If anything, her capitulation is worse.

Not that the Cong nor CPM have responded positively to her appeal. The Congress has made her an insulting offer: to merge the TMC into the Congress. Not that it would have happened anyway, but Mamata’s disdain for Rahul Gandhi is all too obvious. This disdain stands in sharp contrast to her equation with Sonia Gandhi. The latter is someone that Didi fears and respects. The CPM is too flat footed, dogmatic and tied in knots to even come up with a coherent response. And the best part? It wouldn’t matter if all three parties came together. If they try, they will lose bigger. In fact, by even floating this suggestion, Mamata has finished off the last few hopes of winning the election.

With the election done and dusted, it is now amusing to watch the reactions of a certain class that had grown up hating the BJP with elitist passion. Hindiwallahs! Paan, gutkha eaters! These are supposed to be insults. Don’t get angry folks, just laugh. Remember; the election is already over.

And nothing is more funny than watching members of this class squirming and moaning as they realize that the sun don’t shine no more. One Bhadralok babu from Harvard is unable to sleep these days. I heard he is clutching a painting or something by Abanindranath Tagore that has been in his family for generations. He probably thinks it’s some kind of good luck charm that will save Bengal from BJP. Unfortunately, like most of his theories, things like good luck charms and amulets don’t work. Anyway, hard work over Harvard, shall we say?

Then there are the artists, actors and filmmakers. Some have suddenly gone public with various forms of “mental pain” about the way Mamata Banerjee is running the state. It has barely been five years since some of these people went on public platforms asking for a little space at Didi’s feet (one of them literally said this). Now all the “mental pain” and anguish against Didi is surfacing. Basically, they are looking to change camps while the BJP’s recruitment mela in the state is still open.

And finally, there are those bhadralok who seem resolved to go down with the ship. It is a very Bengali way of taking pride in reducing oneself to a pathetic figure. These are the people who did not listen when the Berlin wall fell. They believed that ‘revolution’ would come any day, up until the moment CPM lost power in 2011. The TMC defeated them ideologically, but let the jokers hang around, talking about Bengali exceptionalism. The BJP is not likely to allow any such nostalgia and they know it. As BJP advances, these people are pulling out the same old desperate smears. BJP will ban Hindi in Bengal. BJP will insult Tagore. BJP is against non-vegetarians. BJP will celebrate Diwali which is supposed to be different from Kali Pujo!

ROFL.

As we all know, Bengali intellectuals are much sought after on liberal portals. Nowadays, it is a joy to read their pathetic ramblings. I positively look forward to them. It’s kind of fun, you know. Getting a rise out of the grumpy old uncle who sits with a sour face at family events, complaining that youngsters these days just don’t listen!

Innings defeat for them is now completely certain. Bowling no balls and wide balls is of no avail.

  1. And at the other end of the country, the communists are crashing with great speed. Kerala is now #4 in the League of Wuhan Covids, having beaten TN and continuing to rise with every passing day.

Where is CW’s favorite Shailaja “teacher”? No word. She’s missing in action, as are all the commies in government, their media hangers-on, and the Left-liberal Lutyens club rooting for their favorite example of a blue ribbon state for healthcare.

No more. The commies have shown their…ahem, incompetence in dealing with the virus that was imported from their friendly country, China. As with all things erected on fiction, this too had its time in the sun but now fated to die a slow, painful, death.

  2. Opposition politicians are not learning any lessons from the debacle of the Congress in both 2014 and 2019. Hindu consolidation and awakening is a real thing. No opposition politician can be even seen to be anti-Hindu and survive for long.

Mamata thought she is somehow immune from Hindu consolidation and kept on poking Hindus in the eye. The 2019 election results should have made her see sense but politicians with their hubris seldom see the light. Her minority appeasements and the repeated killing of Hindus by TMC have ensured not only her defeat in the coming elections but also the wiping out of TMC as a party in electoral contention (the mass defections are ensuring that).

BJP needs to have its revenge plans ready. The TMC goons who carried out mass murders of BJP cadres need to pay and need to pay heavily. Hope BJP doesnt start its Sabka Saath nonsense after winning the elections. The first year after winning should be spent in evicting the Bangladeshis and also in UP style encounters for the TMC goons.

Mamata’s great fall should serve as a warning to all opposition parties. Either they have to become Hindu-friendly or depart the election scene permanently. Hindus should themselves kick out all the dynasty parties from the electoral scene. Dynasties have played tremendous mischief and caused tremendous harm, their time is up.

  3. .The election is already over.I would say it is most boring election since last 5-6 years.Everyone and his uncle in Delhi power corridors is resigned to the fact of a BJP victory.Only the question is BJP victory by what margin? Is it 175 or 200 or something like 230+.My bet from what I am hearing from Congress insiders is BJP may end up with 200+ seats in fact I wont be surprised if they swept as much as 250 seats breaking even Left Front record.Further more I wont at all be surprised if Mamata herself lost her own Assembly seat by huge margin

But secular India faces uncertain future if BJP sweeps Bengal.Bengal,Odisha,Bihar consist of East India block. These states once they vote in a party for minimum 10-15 years. So BJP is already sitting pretty with 30-35 Lok Sabha seats even before Lok Sabha election begins in 2024.

Mamata and KCR did huge blunder chasing minority vote bank. One thumb rule in Indian politics is never strengthen the party which is ruling at Center.Jayalalitha,Patnaik and Pawar if you observer always ensured Cong in state level is weak even when it was ruling in Center. Now Modi has own majority.KCR,Mamata strengthened BJP in their states eyeing Muslim vote.

This is because India unlike US,Canada is not federal but Union and Central Government has huge powers and leverage to crush state governments if they want to excercise. If ever single party rule comes in Center.FINISH.Regional parties are doomed. This happened under Indira and now happening under Modi.ED,CBI,IT are being used left and right to fix oponents.Atleast Mamata will fight till election. The weakling KCR will fold up before Amit Shah in next one year

  4. Why doesnt the buffoon Rahul Gandhi resign from politics and settle in some Western country instead of torturing secular Indians like me.He has almost brought Cong to death bed with his lethargy, laziness and aloofness.Atleast if he leaves politics some sensible leader can take up Cong reins and reenergize it.

With Cong under the lazy and dumb Rahul Gandhi on death bed Modi/Shah are swallowing vast swathes of Indian political territory.

It is good the charlatans KCR,Mamata are getting taste of their medicine at hands of BJP.Tn their greediness to finish secular opponents and gain permanent stranglehold minority vote they strengthened BJP.BJP is the anaconda that swallows the hand which feeds it.

The timid chap KCR neither had an organization or caste backing simply fooled Sonia claiming he will merge his party if Telangana is granted only to backstab and grab power ruining Cong in its strongest bastion of united AP beyond repair. He is no Mamata who atleast makes a show of fighting and taking on opponents.KCR would fold up before Modi/Shah within one year.He is terrified of ED/IT/CBI.

Already his bravado was seen when he shut Hyderabad for one day bandh against farm bills only to run to Delhi and kneel before Shah and shamelessly claim farm bills are pro farmers. What a shameful volteface

  5. Nandigram protests made her the CM of WB. She forgot that she was elected with the votes of Hindus who hated the Commies. For whatever reason, after coming to power, she assumed that the consolidation of minority communities’ votes was more important than the Hindu community’s votes. Perhaps she believed that there are more Jaichands than Rakhengars in the Hindu community. Looking back, around 2011 she was not so much against the Hindus, but as Narendra Modi became more and more popular among Hindus, her hatred for Narendra Modi pushed her more and more against Hindus who supported Narendra Modi. And I don’t remember that Narendra Modi was that much against Mamata. He was full of “Didi…Didi” because she defeated the Commies. Having said that, I must say that the mere popularity of the BJP will not make the BJP winner in WB. BJP should not underestimate TMC goons’ ability to steal votes, harass the general voting public, intimidate the voting public.

On a separate note: CW please don’t accept Associate Professor’s position at Princeton. I myself rejected a similar offer from UPenn.

    1. It is not only the TMC but worldwide Jehadis who will try to create trouble during the WB elections. WB is the gateway for Jehadis from neighbouring Bangladesh. The Jehadis will try to keep that gateway open. They know fully well that the gate will be closed if BJP wins. The intent to create trouble was in display during the visits of JP Nadda and Tejasvi Surya when bombs were thrown.

Modi government has to anticipate everything and put enough reserves of Central forces (CRPF, even Army, borrow from UP if needed). They should not be caught napping like they were during CAA riots. Election commission should authorize shoot at sight if TMC goons try to capture booths. BJP cadre themselves need to be armed and trained for their self protection.

Modi government also needs to send strong messages pre-emptively to the TMC cadre against creating trouble. TMC cadre need to be convinced there will be no escape when BJP comes to power.

    1. Maybe I am mistaken or confusing with other stories, but as I remember Jaichand betrayed Rakhengar and let enemies enter the gate and the enemies killed Rakhengar and his people.
