Rohith Vemula case : Consulting editor of Newslaundry tries desperately to salvage the situation

When liberals are caught with their pants down, their last weapon is to try and “intellectualize” the situation. What does that mean? It’s a simple approach :

Step 1: Say something deliberately vague.

Step 2: People demand clarifications because you were so vague.

Step 3: Issue vague clarifications.

Step 4: Back to Step 2.

Infinite loop achieved! After running around the loop a couple of times, the detractors of the liberals will eventually give up and everyone can just call it a draw. Meanwhile, the fact that the liberals were caught with their pants down is forgotten.

Because liberals are so convinced they are so much smarter than everyone else, they think they can get away with this trick every single time. So it is no surprise that they went back to their favorite technique to save the blushes once this story broke all over the internet.

untitled

See if you can find shades of Step 1 in the words of Anand Ranganathan, consulting editor of Newslaundry

untitled

The deliberately confusing tweet intended to seed the infinite loop! Now, Anand Ranganathan has a mind trained in intellectual clarity, for he is a scientist as well. He knows *exactly* what  he is doing here. He has no excuse.

And you’ll never guess the illustrative example he provided to make his “point”.

untitled

The trap was now set. Of course one could ask several questions by playing around with Ranganathan’s  logic. For example:

(1) What if I say I “feel like” a Dalit? Can I get reservations?

(2) What if Sasikala says she “feels innocent”? Is the path clear for her to become CM of Tamil Nadu?

(3) If Ranganathan is so passionate about letting people choose their “real identities”, will he now condemn every single article on Newslaundry and everywhere else that suggests that the RSS is a communal / divisive force? Didn’t he just say that the RSS believes in the oneness of Indian society irrespective of religion?

But, of course, you have to realize that asking these questions only plays into Ranganathan’s hands. He wants you and me to ask those questions. He wants to keep giving “clarifications”. That way he can keep talking about everything except the core issue of liberals caught lying with their pants on fire in the Rohith Vemula case.

And that’s exactly what Ranganathan did. He issued more “clarifications”.

untitled

Excellent. Now people will come up with various other scenarios to counter his clarifications. Excellent … now we will discuss everything except the liberal embarrassment. From the plane of fact where liberals have been caught in the headlights, the debate moves to the plane of the hypothetical.

And Ranganathan took great delight in fuelling this cycle further :

untitled

What if the university administration never intended to discriminate against anyone for being a Dalit or anything else? Doesn’t that mean they were innocent. I repeat, do NOT ask him this, because that’s exactly what he wants you to do.

untitled

Who condemned Rohith? We only condemned your liberal ilk. But people did take the bait and play into his hands. They went far far off topic just like Anand Ranganathan wanted, until he actually felt confident enough to turn the whole thing around on its head.

untitled

See how a professional does it? For the RW, there is something to learn here.

The right way to neutralize the spin and puncture the balloon of people like Anand Ranganathan is simple : stick to the facts and don’t play into their hands. Stick to the fact that liberals cynically used a tragic suicide of a young man for exactly the kind of votebank politics that Rohith Vemula *pleaded* against in his final letter.

When caught on the wrong foot, the liberals want you to step into an infinite  loop of intellectualism till you get worn out and call it quits. Don’t take the bait.

The American hit animated comedy television series South Park uses exaggerated situations to deliver commentary on society.  South Park does an excellent job of pointing out how to stop an intellectual infinite loop before it is set in motion. Sample this dialogue about someone trying to intellectualize their way out of child molestation. It’s between one of the lead characters, a boy named Kyle and an “activist” of “NAMBLA” Here, NAMBLA = North American Man Boy Love Association (I told you they use exaggerated situations).

NAMBLA activist: Does anybody know their rights? You see, I’ve learned something today. Our forefathers came to this country because… they believed in an idea. An idea called “freedom.” They wanted to live in a place where a group couldn’t be prosecuted for their beliefs. Where a person can live the way he chooses to live. You see us as being perverted because we’re different from you. People are afraid of us, because they don’t understand. And sometimes it’s easier to persecute than to understand.

Kyle : Dude, you have sex with children.

NAMBLA activist: We are human. Most of us didn’t even choose to be attracted to young boys. We were born that way. We can’t help the way we are, and if you all can’t understand that, well, then, I guess you’ll just have to put us away.

Kyle: [slowly, for emphasis] Dude, you have sex with children.

See how nicely Kyle avoids getting sucked into the intellectual trap? He stays on course and doesn’t respond to any of the NAMBLA guy’s “arguments”. That’s the right way.

Now, if Anand Ranganathan reads this, he is going to accuse me of comparing him to a child molester. And I won’t be stepping into his trap, FYI. I will stick to pointing out how liberals cynically exploited a tragic suicide.

sujata

That is Sujata Anandan, political editor of the Mumbai edition of the Hindustan Times. And no, she isn’t celebrating the fall of a wicket in an India – Pakistan cricket game. She is talking about the suicide of a young man who had his whole life ahead of him, but chose to give it all up before he was 30 years old.

    1. Anand Ranganathan is desperately trying to keep the cold pot hot. Does the common man really care about Rohit Vermula especially after his death ?Like they say – Raat Gayi to Baat Gayi. These JNU types need to be snubbed and ignored. Intellectual idiots make pathetic writers.

  1. Dear Chaiwallah,

Anand Ranganathan is a Ph.D. in biology from Cambridge University and is (or at least used to be) a professor at JNU. Somewhere along the line he seems to have lost his passion for science and is now writing such crap. I have lost all respect for him (and I say this as someone who knew both his parents — both fine people).

The Telugu press reported ONE YEAR AGO that (i) Rohith Vemula’s father was NOT a dalit, (ii) his parents divorced, and (iii) after that, his mother got S/C certificates for herself and the children using the “good offices” (ahem) of an evangelical. There is nothing new in this. However, the Collector of the Guntur District taking the formal step of cancelling the certificate is certainly new.

BTW Shefali Vaidya had a nice retort to Anand Ranganathans’ crap, here:

    1. Very true Prof. Vidyasagar. This Anand Ranganathan is not an average media idiot. He is a very clever scientist. This makes it 100% certain that he is employing a deliberately wicked tactic.

    2. Good info, Prof Vidyasagar. Unfortunately, the Anand Ranganathan types are mushrooming like anything – think Arun Shourie.

At the root of this all is the liberals outright rejection of Modi as PM. I often wonder what has caused such visceral hatred for Modi among these so-called intellectuals that they seem to abandon common sense and reason. It has created an environment where you are forced to pick sides – you are either for or against Modi (being objective and balanced, which is so essential to democracy, is just not in vogue).

      1. I think different people have a visceral hatred for NaMo for different reasons. Shourie hates NaMo because he did not get into the Cabinet. Still it speaks very poorly of Shourie’s lack of character that he would go around bad-mouthing NaMo to all and sundry. Originally Madhu Kishwar was also showing signs of this — perhaps she believed that she “revived” Modi’s fortunes through her book, and expected to be “rewarded” — but now she seems to have settled down.

In the case of Ranganathan, I think he has given up on trying to be a competent scientist. On his Twitter page one sees a plug for a novel he has written set in the Mizo insurgency (or was it the Naga insurgency? Anyway no matter). He has been writing for Newslaundry for quite a while now. Anyone who has aspirations to do serious science would not be wasting time on things like this, because achieving excellence in science is a full-time occupation! I don’t think Ranganathan hates NaMo so much as he wants to look “cool” to his peer group. Unfortunately in India, a professor can do whatever he wants to do with his time. Therefore Ranganathan, while being ostensibly a Professor at JNU, can spend his time on all sorts of non-professorial things.

Having said all this, I do sense a new and higher level of desperation among the lib-turds. The Delhi and Bihar elections gave them some hope, but now even they seem to have thrown in the towel on UP. Please see this tweet by Rahul Kanwal:

  2. If it’s worth anything, I’ve been sticking to my statement since the beginning because I have seen how things are in hyd university. Rohith vemula and his friends were thugs who condoned and sometimes initiated violence against opposing groups(almost exclusively abvp). The minute he committed suicide, everyone remembered the value of a young life, blah blah blah. Imagine a similar situation in Kerala if a cpm worker, perhaps belonging to a backward community, who actively participates in assaults on RSS /bjp people, commits suicide. How would /should any side of the spectrum react?

  4. And BJP has done quite well in the 2nd phase of the Odisha polls as well. They managed to win 1 LS seat in 2014.They could win 6-7 seats(or maybe even more) in 2019 if they keep the momentum.

  5. And don’t forget about these Pseudo Liberal’s reaction when Smruti Irani said the Rohith Vemula was not a Dalit. Everybody jumped on her.

On positive note, now that it is established that Rohith Vemula was not Dalit, Mr. Kejriwal may offer better job to his brother than what he offered before !

  6. Completely off-topic but came across this interesting nugget on TOILET paper.

    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/only-ncert-books-at-all-cbse-schools/articleshow/57174456.cms

This may be a quantum leap toward arresting the decline of standards in what is currently being taught to the future generations. I have a niece in Class VII and, trust me, distortion does not even begin to describe the kind of vile that is being taught to our future generations. With this move, rather than go after private publishers to upgrade their syllabus, this just makes NCERT textbooks mandatory. Of course, even the NCERT textbooks have seen a lot of machinations and distortions over the years so the curriculum may have to be updated but this could be a stepping stone toward that.

Would welcome a blog on this from CW and opinions of more informed people than me on this subject.
